What is Homeopathy?
Mention homeopathy and often times people will think you are talking about herbal medicine. Yes, many homeopathic remedies are made from plants and herbs but homeopathy is a medicine in a class by itself. Homeopathic remedies can be made from anything in nature like plants, minerals, animals and also any substance that can be thought of whether it be man made like pharmaceuticals, or chemicals.
The wondrous thing about homeopathy is that the remedies are made and diluted in such a way that none of the crude form is left- just the energy or information from that substance remains. This makes it safe to use as there are no drug interactions to worry about or side effects to make you wary.
The basis of homeopathy is "Like cures like", which simply means if a substance causes symptoms in a healthy person it will also cure those symptoms in a sick person. Homeopaths do not look at the disease name or at only the problem area. We look at you as a whole person- mental, emotional, physical, dreams, and general things like foods you love or hate, temperature effects, the way you handle stress and other things. From all the qualities we find a remedy that most accurately fits those qualities.
Samuel Hahnemann(1755-1843) was the "founder" of homeopathy. He was a German physician who became frustrated with the medical way of healing. At that time the way to help heal was more harmful than helpful. Physicians used bloodletting, blistering plasters, purgatives and enemas which often made the situation worse than it already was.
Hahnemann decided he did not like that so he started experimenting. Cinchona bark was the leading medicine to treat malaria. After taking this for a few days he began to exhibit all the signs of Malaria. It was this first experiment that led to the "Law of Similars"(like cures like) and his continued learning, teaching, and discovering in homeopathy.
